Over the years of governance, I have observed that Pakistan’s political system has been governed by some specific elite or feudal families within the country.
Our democratic parliamentary system’s fundamental base is that the political parties, who play a predominant role to coordinate this system, should be democratic themselves. They should give their supporter or worker the opportunity to elect their leadership through a democratic process.
The workers, supporters and loyalists that sacrifice the most for their leaders are always unnoticed. They are treated as if they were mere servants and are warned to never think about becoming a leader. All these families who have ruled the country have not shown any amount of significant effort that has helped the country progress. They don’t have the capabilities to run the country. What are they so proud of? Have they been victorious in the war on Kashmir?
The deceased leaders that participated in the “Pakistan Movement” were the real leaders who sacrificed for this country -they selflessly surrendered whatever they had. But it is an obviously disappointing fact that none of their decedents, heirs or workers took the next step; to govern the country properly. Liaqut Ali Khan and Fatimah Jinnah collaborated and participated in the elections when they purposely dragged in them, otherwise they did not wish to be a part of it.
Now, family politics was never an option for Muslim League. The trend of family politics was inaugurated by Pakistan Peoples Party, where it forcefully took over the country’s politics. Unfortunately, this is becoming a trend in the Muslim League. The different factions of Muslim League that have been formed so far have all switched towards this tendency where family politics is being encouraged within them.
I am very proud for the decision me and my fellow members too back in August 2009. We separated from Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam – lead by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Ilahi – because we had demanded that the party adopted democracy in its affairs instead of handing it over to a specific family. The current conditions of the country’s politics indicate that we made a wise decision two years ago.
I would also like to mention that there was an article in the constitution titled as, Article 17-4, stating that all political parties adopt democratic elections. That particular article was removed from the constitution while every other remained.
The solution to all this turmoil within the country’s politics is democracy. The kind of democracy when someone such as Barack Obama – whose mother was from Kansas and father belonged to Kenya – a simple man who participated in the elections and became the President of the United States of America as well as the leader of the country’s democratic party.
Americans have a complete thought process. They have democracy and when they elect a leader they look up to him and stick to him. In our country, the vote bank is derived from two sectors mainly: pro PPP and the other is anti-PPP. This vote bank is governed by the ruling families of the country. But when the elections will take place according to the democratic procedure, the civilians will stay behind the leadership instead of looking up to the ruling family.
Therefore the only way to renovate Pakistan’s political system is to understand the true meaning of democracy and adopt it.
